Sohrai – Jiwi | 100% Linen | Limited Edition
The Story
Jiwi, the Santali word for life, finds its expression here through a landscape inhabited across land, water and vegetation.
The composition unfolds across two distinct areas on the right front of the shirt. Deer appear amid flowering vegetation in the upper section, while the larger composition below brings together fish, a turtle and plant life within a hand-painted border. A bird on the chest pocket extends this landscape across the garment. Together, these forms give Jiwi its meaning—not as a name placed upon the artwork, but as an expression of life existing in different forms within a shared natural world.
This interconnected vocabulary of animals, birds and vegetation belongs to the broader pictorial language of Sohrai, the wall-painting tradition of Jharkhand, closely associated with an agrarian world, the post-harvest Sohrai observance and cattle. On Jiwi, this visual language moves from the wall to linen while retaining the irregularities of line, proportion and gesture inherent to work executed by hand.
