Jeev Dhara — the current of living beings.

Jeev Dhara draws from Sohrai’s intimate relationship with the natural world, bringing birds, animals and vegetation together within a continuous landscape of life.

A solitary peahen rests on the chest pocket. Across the back, a peacock and peahen appear alongside a fawn, surrounded by flowering vegetation and enclosed within hand-painted borders. Together, they evoke life across generations — courtship, companionship and new life existing within the same natural continuum.

Painted entirely by hand on linen, variations in line, proportion and brush movement remain visible as evidence of the maker. Jeev Dhara carries Sohrai’s living world from wall to cloth — life not as separate forms, but as an interconnected flow.

Sohrai is an Indigenous mural-painting tradition associated with Jharkhand, particularly the Hazaribagh region and neighbouring centres of artistic practice. Traditionally created on the earthen walls of homes, Sohrai painting is closely connected with the harvest season, cattle and the relationship between human life and the natural world. The tradition is recognised for its rhythmic lines, layered forms and the use of natural earth and mineral pigments.

Animals, birds, trees, plants and geometric forms frequently appear within its visual language. Characterised by bold silhouettes, fluid movement and instinctive mark-making, Sohrai art reflects close observation of the living landscape and knowledge carried through generations of artisan practitioners.

The artworks presented here are contemporary hand-painted works executed by artisan practitioners associated with the living tradition of Sohrai art in Jharkhand and adapted for garments developed by The House of Rule Zero. They are created as original works on garments and should not be understood as historical reproductions, traditional ceremonial paintings or documentary recreations of Sohrai murals.
