Madhava brings the intricate border language of Odisha Pattachitra into full view — serpents crossing in rhythm, flowers held within repeating frames, unfolding petals, scalloped forms and finely worked vegetal details.

In traditional Pattachitra, ornament is integral to the construction of the painted surface. Narratives and figures are often surrounded by carefully articulated borders, where small forms repeat in measured sequences and successive bands build density around the central image.

Madhava draws from this visual vocabulary. Across the shoulder and lower corner of the kurta, multiple concentric registers are arranged one within another, each carrying a distinct form of ornament.

A prominent band is formed by intertwined serpents, their elongated bodies repeatedly crossing before separating and meeting again. Serpentine forms have a longstanding presence in Odisha’s sacred and artistic traditions; within this composition, their interlacing bodies also create movement and continuity across the border.

Alongside them runs a sequence of small flowers enclosed within individual compartments, turning each blossom into part of a continuous measured register. Another field brings together floral forms and branching lines, creating the closely worked surface characteristic of Pattachitra’s ornamental language.

A succession of scalloped and petal-like forms changes the rhythm again, moving from precise repetition towards broader floral geometry. At the outer edge, teardrop-shaped forms, radiating blossoms, curls and vegetal details alternate along the curve, completing the composition through another layer of repetition.

No single band stands alone. Serpent, flower, petal, scallop and line are accumulated through successive registers, demonstrating how Pattachitra painters can build complexity from the repetition of individually drawn forms.
