Associated with abundance and prosperity, the fish is one of the most significant motifs in Sujani embroidery. Reflecting the natural wealth of Bihar, it symbolizes fertility, harmony, and the life-giving forces of water. Traditionally, Sujani embroidery was crafted on quilts for newborns, where fish motifs served as protective symbols to ward off evil influences. This hand-embroidered Sujani handkerchief carries forward that heritage, embodying prosperity, protection, and cultural continuity.

Sujani is an embroidered textile tradition associated with the Mithila region of present-day Bihar. Historically created through layers of cloth joined with running stitches, the practice developed as a form of narrative and decorative needlework. Human figures, animals, plants, daily life and social observations frequently appear within its visual language.

The embroidered surface is characterised by dense stitch work that simultaneously creates structure, texture and imagery, allowing stories and observations to emerge through thread.
