Bhil - The Living Tree | 100% Linen | Select Edition
The Story
In Bhil painting, the Mahua tree often occupies the central space of the composition. Activity gathers around it rather than moving away from it.
Men and women are shown collecting fallen flowers. Children remain near the trunk without assigned roles. Birds feed among fruit-bearing branches while deer and other animals stay along the ground line. Movement continues around the tree but rarely leaves its presence. Mahua functions as a daily resource. Its flowers are eaten fresh, dried, or ground into flour and are also fermented during gatherings. Bark, leaves, and seed oil are used in traditional healing practices.
The tree is not separated from routine life. Work, rest, food, and celebration occur in the same place.
The painting is carried onto a linen shirt.
