The Story

In the Warli way of life, fishing is more than sustenance — it is a ritual of rhythm, resilience, and community. The hand-painted Matsya captures this essence of daily toil and shared celebration — where men cast nets at dawn, women gather near the riverbanks, and every catch becomes a moment of gratitude. Each brushstroke on this fine linen shirt mirrors that harmony — the strength of hard work, the poetry of survival, and the quiet joy of a day well-lived. It reminds us that every effort, no matter how ordinary, sustains not just the body but the spirit — that survival, too, is a celebration. For the modern wearer, Matsya becomes a tribute to perseverance — to those who labor with purpose and find meaning in their daily rhythm. It is a story of work, will, and wonder — of flowing through life with grace, groundedness, and gratitude.

About Warli Art Work

Warli art emerges from the visual traditions of the Warli communities of western India, particularly in the regions of present-day Maharashtra and adjoining Gujarat. The practice is recognised through the use of geometric forms, including circles, triangles and lines, arranged to depict human activity, agriculture, rituals and community life. Traditionally executed using white pigment on earthen surfaces, Warli art places emphasis on movement, relationship and collective experience rather than individual portraiture.

Its visual language remains one of the most distinctive forms of narrative representation in Indian folk art. Characterised by rhythmic compositions and symbolic simplification, Warli communicates complex observations through elemental forms and spatial relationships.

The artworks presented here are contemporary hand-painted works executed by artisan practitioners associated with the living tradition of Warli art and adapted for garments developed by The House of Rule Zero. They are created as original works on garments and should not be understood as historical reproductions, ritual paintings or documentary recreations of traditional Warli wall paintings.

Colour Variations

Product imagery is captured under natural lighting conditions to represent the object as faithfully as possible. Variations in ambient light, photographic interpretation, device displays and screen settings may result in slight differences between the colour shown online and the actual product.

Hand-painted pigments and embroidery threads may also appear differently under changing light conditions owing to the nature of the materials and fibres used in their creation.

Handcrafted Variations

Each piece is individually hand painted and may contain subtle variations in brushwork, line quality, paint density and motif execution. These characteristics arise through the movement of the artist’s hand and form part of the individuality of the object. They should not be considered defects.

Visual Representation

Certain images may be digitally rendered to illustrate styling, context, scale or garment presentation. While every effort is made to faithfully represent the artwork, construction and character of the object, minor differences in colour, texture, drape or appearance may exist between rendered imagery and the physical product.

Clients seeking further examination of the object may request additional photographs of the garment and its handcrafted details.
