The Story

Gorjan takes its name from a Sora word for village — an inhabited place shaped by dwelling, movement and community.

Hand-painted on linen, the composition looks beyond the house as an isolated structure to the life that gathers around it. Across the upper back, a dwelling occupies the centre while human figures move on either side — some alongside horses, others carrying loads — held between continuous geometric borders. The chest pocket carries a quieter expression of the same world: a solitary dwelling sheltered between two palm trees.

Together, the artworks form a record of inhabited landscape. Architecture, people, animals and movement coexist within a single pictorial field, reflecting the narrative character through which Saura painting has long represented the worlds surrounding everyday life.

The black linework retains the directness of the artist’s hand, punctuated sparingly with yellow and orange. Irregularities in line, proportion and painted surface remain visible as evidence of its individual making rather than being corrected into mechanical uniformity.

Gorjan is not an illustration of a single house. It is a portrait of life around it.

About Saura Art Work

Saura art is an Indigenous mural-painting tradition associated with the Saora communities of Odisha, particularly the southern regions of the state. Traditionally created on the earthen walls of homes, Saura painting is closely connected with ritual life, agricultural cycles, community memory and the relationship between people and the natural world. The tradition is recognised for its precise linear forms, rhythmic repetition and densely organised compositions.

Human figures, animals, birds, trees, the sun and moon, and scenes of cultivation, movement and communal life frequently appear within its visual language. Characterised by interconnected figures and narrative arrangements, Saura art uses seemingly simple forms to construct complex representations of life, belief and the surrounding landscape.

The artworks presented here are contemporary hand-painted works executed by artisan practitioners associated with the living tradition of Saura art in Odisha and adapted for garments developed by The House of Rule Zero. They are created as original works on garments and should not be understood as historical reproductions, traditional ritual paintings or documentary recreations of Saura murals.

Colour Variations

Product imagery is captured under natural lighting conditions to represent the object as faithfully as possible. Variations in ambient light, photographic interpretation, device displays and screen settings may result in slight differences between the colour shown online and the actual product.

Hand-painted pigments and embroidery threads may also appear differently under changing light conditions owing to the nature of the materials and fibres used in their creation.

Handcrafted Variations

Each piece is individually hand painted and may contain subtle variations in brushwork, line quality, paint density and motif execution. These characteristics arise through the movement of the artist’s hand and form part of the individuality of the object. They should not be considered defects.

Visual Representation

Certain images may be digitally rendered to illustrate styling, context, scale or garment presentation. While every effort is made to faithfully represent the artwork, construction and character of the object, minor differences in colour, texture, drape or appearance may exist between rendered imagery and the physical product.

Clients seeking further examination of the object may request additional photographs of the garment and its handcrafted details.
