Odisha Pattachitra - Venu | 100% Linen | Limited Edition
The Story
Venu brings together the signs through which Lord Krishna has been remembered across devotional and visual traditions.
At its centre is the venu — the flute from which the kurta takes its name. Rather than portraying Lord Krishna as a complete figure, the composition evokes his presence through a gathering of recognisable attributes.
The flute recalls Lord Krishna as the divine musician, while the peacock feather belongs to one of his most enduring visual identities. Alongside them appear the shankha, chakra and gada — conch, discus and mace — attributes rooted in the iconography of Lord Vishnu and, within the composition, connecting Lord Krishna to the larger Vaishnava tradition.
The lotus anchors these sacred forms within a symbol long associated with divinity, purity and auspiciousness in Indian visual culture. Seen together, the elements operate not as independent decoration but as a symbolic portrait: Lord Krishna is absent in bodily form, yet made present through the objects and emblems associated with him.
This manner of communicating a sacred narrative through recognisable visual signs finds a natural home in Odisha Pattachitra, a living painting tradition shaped by generations of devotional image-making and closely associated with the cultural landscape surrounding Lord Jagannath at Puri.
In Venu, that vocabulary is carried onto linen by hand. The painting retains the clarity of its individual elements while allowing them to form a single composition across the garment.
Venu is an encounter with Lord Krishna without his portrait — his presence assembled through the flute, peacock feather, lotus and Vaishnava attributes that have carried his memory through centuries of Indian visual culture.
