The Story

In Odisha Pattachitra ornament, repeating border units combine ritual emblems with vegetal fillers. The shankha (conch) appears as the primary motif, accompanied by floral forms within a continuous decorative band. Such borders frame devotional surfaces rather than depict narrative scenes.

About Odisha Pattachitra Art Work

Pattachitra is a painting tradition associated with Odisha, particularly the regions surrounding Puri, Raghurajpur and neighbouring centres of artistic practice. The name combines the Sanskrit words patta (cloth or prepared surface) and chitra (painting). The tradition is recognised for disciplined line work, decorative borders, balanced compositions and the use of mineral and natural pigments on carefully prepared surfaces.

Narrative scenes, flora, fauna, symbolic motifs and devotional imagery frequently appear within its visual language. Characterised by precision of execution and ornamental detail, Pattachitra places equal emphasis on composition, line, colour and surface decoration.

Colour Variations
