Emerging from the royal town of Chamba in Himachal Pradesh, these hand-embroidered textiles embody centuries of heritage, devotion, and artistry, nurtured in the royal courts of the 17th and 18th centuries. The Chamba Rumal is renowned for its exquisite double-sided embroidery, worked in untwisted silk threads so that each motif mirrors itself in perfect harmony on both sides. Within its delicate stitches live timeless narratives of mythology, folklore, and cosmic harmony. Once exchanged as intimate tokens of love and legacy, the Chamba Rumal today endures as an emblem of India’s cultural grandeur. The art form was certified with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007.

Chamba Rumal is an embroidered textile tradition associated with the Chamba region of present-day Himachal Pradesh. Historically executed on handwoven cloth using double-sided embroidery techniques, the practice is recognised for its ability to produce nearly identical imagery on both sides of the fabric. Narrative scenes, floral compositions, animals and symbolic motifs frequently appear within its visual language.

The tradition combines drawing and embroidery, with the stitched surface functioning as a medium for detailed pictorial representation. Distinguished by its reversible execution and narrative richness, Chamba Rumal places equal emphasis on line, composition and stitch precision, allowing imagery to emerge through carefully controlled needlework.
